WINDHOEK IN A NUTSHELL
LET'S TALK ABOUT BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES
SAFETY
Windhoek is generally considered safe for travelers. Like any city, it's important to stay vigilant, especially at night. Pickpocketing is a thing and it is recommended to be very cautious about when bringing valuables along. Overall, it's a safe place to explore. Feel free to walk around the city during the day or going for a run in the streets in the morning and rather take a taxi at night.
WALKABILITY
While Windhoek is not as pedestrian-friendly as some European cities, certain areas, like the city center, or coffee shops and restaurants close to the coliving are quite walkable. However, having a car or using ride-sharing services is more convenient. Please prepare to use local Uber as your main means of transport. Our community members also often like to rent a small community car to be extra flexible.
EVENTS & VIBE
Please do not expect Windhoek to be as buzzing and vibing as Cape Town or other capitals. Windhoek hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, celebrating everything from arts and culture to food and music. Together with our community manager, the coliving community and local friends it is fun to immerse yourself in the local culture and co-create a great experience.
WEATHER
Windhoek enjoys a semi-arid climate, characterized by hot days and cooler nights. It is getting very hot and dry from December - February. It is a very sunny country with little rain in the rainy season (December - March). Make sure you can cope with hot and dry weather, some rain in the rainy season and you will be happy with coming to Windhoek.
FOOD
The city has well-stocked grocery stores with everything you need, even for vegetarians. Namibia is known being a meat loving country. Still, many places offer very healthy vegetarian dishes. In the traditional restaurants, however, the menu is sometimes dominated by meat dishes. A good mix is what makes it possible for vegetarians and vegans to enjoy their stay.
INTERNET
Windhoek typically boasts reliable, high-speed internet, especially in establishments that have invested in it. Our coliving comes with a stable 150 Mb fiber connection. While most hotels and cafes cater to digital nomads with good Wi-Fi, some places like Airbnb's may still have slower connections if they did not invest. Having a SIM card as a backup is recommended for rare outages or slower speeds.
CULTURE
Windhoek boasts a rich and diverse cultural tapestry shaped by its colonial past and indigenous traditions. Visitors can experience this through its architecture, cuisine, arts, and festivals, reflecting influences from German, Afrikaans, and African heritage. We always recommend to study a bit of Namibias history before coming to this country to learn which challenges they share.
